Baja California Sur is a state by the Pacific Ocean in Mexico with over 28,000 square miles of territory. Characterized by deserts, mountains and coastal flatland, its climate is desert-like in most parts of it and is bathed by the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortes.
Its proximity to mainland Mexico and the United States have made it a sought-after location for vacations and eco-touristic and recreational activities such as golf, fishing, and water sports. Among the major cities are Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, La Paz, Loreto and Ciudad Constitución. Several more communities, but in smaller population density include Todos Santos, Los Barriles, La Ribera, Pescadero and Santa Rosalía.
The state currently has 4 different international airports: Loreto, La Paz, San Jose del Cabo and one in Cabo San Lucas. Major airlines have direct flights to these cities from Los Angeles, Houston, Phoenix, San Diego and Dallas in the US; and from Mexico City, Guadalajara, Mazatlan and Monterrey in Mexico. Cabo San Lucas, on the Pacific Ocean, constantly receives touristic cruise ships and is the host of the largest and most important fishing tournament in the world, the Bisbee Black & Blue. Pichilingue, 17 Kms north of La Paz city, is a major port that connects major freight and passengers transportation to cities in mainland Mexico, such as Mazatlan, Topolobampo and Guaymas.
The East Cape
The eastern end of the Baja peninsula is called the East Cape. Its natural beauty combines white sandy beaches, copal forests, organic farms, coral reefs, mountains and waterfalls. It is a common spot for fishing, kite surfing, scuba diving and snorkeling due to the mildness of its summer-like weather all year long. Communities such as Cabo Pulmo, La Ribera, Los Barriles and Buena Vista have been chosen as the preferred destination for a quiet vacation away from the crowds, and for Americans and Canadians to retire. Cabo Pulmo National Park is the one of the only living reefs in the Sea of Cortez. Located within 50 minutes drive from the Los Cabos International Airport.
